Vibrant and Growing Import Market
Since Taiwan’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2002, Taiwan’s total trade volume in agricultural products and processed foods has steadily increased. In 2005, the total value of trade reached US$12.9 billion far exceeding US$10.2 billion from 2002. After Taiwan opened its market to the world, imports of food and agricultural products have significantly increased. In 2005, the total import value reached US$9.3 billion showing a substantial rise of 32% compared with US$7 billion in 2002. The lowering of tariffs and elimination of other trade barriers have also provided improved market access for a wide range of U.S. agricultural products including fresh produce, diary products, meat, seafood, and processed food products. Whereas Taiwan is the United States’ sixth largest export market in the world for food and agricultural products, the United States is Taiwan’s chief and largest supplier of imported agricultural products. Imports from the U.S. in 2005 topped US$2.8 billion indicating a 17% increase from US$2.4 billion in 2002. Taiwan also has the highest per capita consumption of U.S. agricultural products outside the U.S.A. and Canada, and those figures are still rising. Since 2000, the U.S. has enjoyed a 30% market share, surpassing its runner-up Australia by nearly four-fold. With its increasing adoption of U.S. and western food tastes and reliance on imports, Taiwan is a dynamic market for exports of top quality U.S. food and agricultural products.
Past Success
Each year, Food Taipei has attracted tens of thousands of visitors to take part in this grand event. In 2006, over 50,000 Taiwanese trade visitors attended the show, resulting in 357 promising contacts to U.S. exhibitors. In addition to US$1 million of actual on-site sales, U.S. exhibitors projected US$62.6 million in sales over the next 12 months. Products that generated interest included beverages, beef products, popcorn, organic products, pork products, soybeans, and poultry products.
