The Development of SSD Market ...more

Since 1997, SSD (formerly FFD from msystems) has been deployed globally as drop-in hard disk drive replacements in the Military and Aerospace sectors. Extreme conditions of ruggedness, high reliability, shock, vibration, humidity, altitude and temperature had to be met. Hard disk drives do not meet these requirements. SSD was the solution of choice even at the cost of more than $100 per 1GB. Since then the market has expanded to applications such as Telecom who couldn’t take the risk of the mechanical hard drives, even when the premium of flash over HDD was still high.

In 2007 the adoption of SSD over HDD has begun for the Mobile PC market. The cost came down sufficiently to enable SSDs for the road warriors. These are the early adopters in the thin & light notebook segment for whom the cost premium over an HDD warrants the SSD advantage of durability, reliability, high system performance and low power consumption.

As the main barrier to mass market adoption is still the cost of NAND and higher capacity, a migration from binary NAND to MLC NAND is expected. MLC flash has a reputation of compromises in terms of accuracy and performance. However, MLC from SanDisk overcomes these pitfalls and will ensure further development of the SSD Mobile PC market to the mainstream consumer in 2008.
